What?
Investing in Tomorrow’s Transportation Today, or IT3, is the development of transportation strategies to improve access and mobility for Georgians. This is not another plan or study – rather this is a business case that will give us a clear understanding of how to invest in transportation infrastructure and services that will yield positive returns for Georgia’s citizens, businesses, and visitors for decades to come.

Why?
Georgia’s past investments in transportation have been critical to our success. However, our success has also created population and business growth that have challenged mobility in our cities, ports, and major transportation hubs. Meanwhile, many rural areas still lack access to jobs and economic centers. Current transportation plans will not sufficiently protect our future quality of life and ensure future competitiveness in the global economy.

Who?
The State Transportation Board and Governor Perdue have charged GDOT Commissioner Gena Evans to oversee and direct the IT3 effort. Assisting Commissioner Evans is Dick Anderson, Executive Director of the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority. Day-to-day work will be performed by McKinsey and Company, one of the largest and best strategic planning consultants. Together with the Lieutenant Governor, the Speaker of the House, and General Assembly members, local and regional stakeholders will be engaged. A Listening Tour will enable optimal input and discussion at locations throughout the state.

When?
IT3 was announced in June 2008 and will run throughout the Summer and Fall, 2008. Dates for the Listening Tour are tentatively scheduled for late September and will be advertised in local media outlets once dates and meeting locations are confirmed.

What’s Next?
State-level transportation goals along with ways to measure current and future performance against targeted outcomes will be developed. Broad strategies will be explored and evaluated for their ability to meet the goals and performance targets. Projects that match strategic outcomes will be identified and prioritized, and general cost figures will be calculated. In order to execute these strategies, existing and new resources will be examined. Criteria for assessing resourcing options will include sustainability, equity, and diversity of possible sources.

Solutions and opportunities will be developed to fit the unique transportation profile of Georgia’s travelers.

How Can I Get Involved?
Please send us your or your group’s comments through our feedback form. Attend the September listening tour meetings
